How to Prep Your Grill After a Winter Break

The spring sun is just now beginning to become the norm; meaning that it’s time to break out your grill, select a choice steak, and enjoy the peace of a home-cooked steak dinner.

We’ve already taught you how to make the perfect steak at home. But you can’t get the job done right without a well-prepped and cleaned grill.

Trust us when we say that your grill’s winter break has been tough on it, and it’s time to deliver some TLC.

If you’re ready to make a steak worthy of a Dallas steakhouse at home, follow our easy steps that will get your grill cleaned up in no time at all!

Inspect Your Entire Grill

Your first step towards a cleaner grill is to inspect it from top to bottom. During the inspection, not only are you examining how much cleaning you’ll have to do, but also whether or not your equipment suffered any damage over winter.

Some common damages to look out for are:

  • Rusted burners
  • Leaks in your propane distribution hose (spread soapy water on your hose and turn your tank on. If bubbles form, you have a leak)
  • Damaged ignition pieces
  • Chewed through wiring from winter rodents

Remove Any Debris

If you’ve found that nothing needs urgent replacement, open up the lid of your grill and get rid of any leftover debris. From leaves that have fallen into your grill, to old charcoal you never cleaned out after its last use, you’re going to want a clean, fresh surface for when you cook your favorite cut of steak during the upcoming spring and summer seasons.

Scrub Your Grill Down

After you’ve removed your debris, remove your grates and set them aside. Your next step is to use warm, soapy water and a scrubber to clean out the inside of your grill. Remember, to avoid chemicals like oven cleaner that can corrode essential parts of your grill.

Clean Your Grates

Once you’ve cleaned out the inside of your grill, it’s time to give your grates some attention. The last thing you want is your first steak to taste like remnants of last summer!

You want to ensure your grates are rust-proof. So, you should grab a large bucket and fill it with an even mixture of vinegar and water. From there, let your grates soak in the bucket overnight.

After they’ve soaked, scrub them down, dry them off, and then lather them with a light rub of vegetable oil (Do not use the sprays. These are flammable).

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees and let them sit in there for a few hours. Once this process is done, shut down your oven, let the grates cool, and you have officially rust-proofed for the grilling season.

Clean Off Your Exterior

Finally, give the exterior of your grill a good cleaning. In most cases, soapy water should do the trick. But if your grill is stainless steel and requires a deeper clean, we recommend purchasing a reliable stainless steel cleaner and cleaning off any exterior grease and grime.
